Our second to last song was this mash up of the folk song "Peace Round" with a second aeolian Orff/Keetman piece from MFK Vol. 5 -- another musical challenge that the kids were totally up to.<br />
<br />
The final concert of the year is a little bittersweet as we say good bye to our fifth graders -- Louie, Cole, Alondra and Alyssa -- it's been a gas gigging with you. You'll be missed. Good luck on your musical journeys through middle school and beyond. The kids and I used to joke about whether this was called ten short pieces #9 or nine short pieces #10. Despite its unwieldy name, it is one of the most frequently used Orff pieces at conferences because of it's high drama. Our kids performed it beautifully.Richard Lawtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13755944780698478679noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9153684164642626159.post-75750624409414506262013-05-18T12:56:00.001-07:002013-05-18T12:56:06.526-07:00Concert in the Park, Summer 2013 - "Pretty Saro"<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/66471084?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe><br />

Playing Alto recorders is such a challenge that some years I don't get to them. This year, however, I had so many recorder players that I was able to use this challenging version of one of my all time favorite songs. Kelly song (which a number of you already know) will be our third song for culmination. As you practice, remember what we talked about in class regarding runs or melismas at the ends of line (and that is, R. Kelly does them; we don't). We'll talk more about this on Friday.<br />

I like what the words have to say about personal integrity and I think it will sound better with our piano accompaniment. Many of you may already know it, but here is a recording with the lyrics -- as we will be practicing in class today!<br />

Another new thing we tried was this improvisatory made up on the spot jam to a power point video Mr. Rikko put together of first and second grade art. This is something we've done in the classroom but never in one of our performances. As cool as it was to watch it was even cooler to be part of. Nice job jazz cats! </p>

<p>
Fantastic job everybody at the Concert in the Park on Friday! </p>
<p>
<br></p>
<p>
One of the things that was really fun and different this year was the fact that, due to the early start of school, the concert date fell in early November. As a result we had reason to try more Halloween themed material, including this piece written by Doug Goodkin, with an arrangement by our kids.</p>

Recorder ensemble members -- here's one additional video that should help you with our new song. You will really need to know the melody well to perform it as a Canon so practice, practice, practice! Hi musicians -- I am jumping ahead to lesson 9 here because it focuses partly on the<br />
F#, a note we will be using a lot in row next few weeks. As for the Bb, ensemble members will be using that too eventually so give it a try -- it's all good!Richard Lawtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13755944780698478679noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9153684164642626159.post-91034511221619017512012-10-14T07:37:00.002-07:002012-10-14T08:00:18.508-07:00Three Minute Recorder 6 - Low D<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/16414721?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="500"></iframe><br />
<br />
And here's a review of the low D, so go ahead and review. From here I am going to skip over a couple of videos to get to some other notes we need right away.<br />

Hi 3rd Graders and Recorder Ensemble -- I have been remiss (as one of you pointed out in rehearsal) in updating my three minute recorder videos, so let's get caught up. Lesson 5 focuses on the high C and D. Most of you are doing this pretty well, but take a look anyway. Remember -- your sound can always get sweeter.Richard Lawtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13755944780698478679noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9153684164642626159.post-41528375906458529502012-09-26T11:07:00.003-07:002012-09-26T11:07:38.322-07:005th Grade Week 5 -- Beginning our compositions<br />

The remaining weeks in 5th grade music will be spent on our compositions -- each student will get a chance to apply what they have learned about melody, harmony and rhythm in creating a four part 8 measure piece, which we will hopefully get to play in class. </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The first goal, and this weeks homework assignment, is to create 4 measures of melody. To that end I am posting a link to a cool online keyboard you can use. Remember we are not using F and B's or any of the black keys. Remember also the three elements successful melodies include:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
They have contour.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
They have repeating rhythm pattern.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
They resolve to the home note (more on this next week).</div>
